Why be a singer if not to make a difference? Erin Guinup's
message for singers is that there has never in her lifetime been a
more important time to be a musician. Make a difference!
Building community through music even when you have been
forced to move across the world - that is the goal of the Tacoma
Refugee choir, started by Erin Guinup in 2016.
Erin is not only the director of the choir, she is also a
professional singer, voice teacher, and the host of the Why We Sing
Podcast
The choir started as a project at the Tacoma Community House,
an organization that serves the people of Tacoma. It was a way of
building bridges between communities.
Erin says about why the choir is great for refugees and
non-refugee community members, "When we sing together we find out
what we have in common. We build feelings of trust when we sing
together."
